about farmstead hudson valley
Farmstead Hudson Valley is more than a farm. It’s the story of the history of the Hudson Valley and the many generations who have left their mark on our land.
The Heart Of Our Story
We are, first and foremost, growers and stewards of the land, grounded in a commitment to sustainability.
We are also artists and makers, curators and shopkeepers, inspired by the diversity of artisanal talent that is at the core of our community. Committed to telling the story of our vibrant Hudson Valley home.
We are on a journey, one that inspires and roots us in creating joy and belonging through authentic connection, and the beauty of the land in our care.
A Sense of place
Farmstead Hudson Valley was conceived in 2016 with our acquisition of a historic strawberry farm in Stuyvesant. With far reaching views to the west and fertile fields, it now serves as the agricultural core for our small farm.
We have since made our home, like many generations before us, in a 17th century Dutch stone house overlooking the Hudson River. The Staats House and its surrounding fields and wetlands is a story of settlement and reinvention, one which we carry with deference and with respect for the Mahican Indians who once made this place their home.
Over years, we have peeled back layers of overgrowth and decay to reveal the beauty of this place, the vistas overlooking the river, the rolling fields, and historic agricultural Twin Barns at The Staats House. In this unfolding, we have found beauty and life purpose, connection to our community, and sense of place.
Meet the Team
alix and david becker
Land stewardship runs deep through the lives of Alix and David Becker, owners of Farmstead Hudson Valley. Natives of Northern California, they both spent their early years in farm fields and agricultural areas where the sounds and smells of the land defined home.
Today, with their family, they have embraced the Hudson Valley’s agricultural and artistic community, guiding their vision of land stewardship and community commitment that is at the heart of Farmstead Hudson Valley.
Alfredo Martinez
A passionate and intuitive farmer, Alfredo grew up on a small ranch in the Hidalgo region of Mexico where his father grew produce and flowers and raised livestock. His farming experience continued when he came to the United States in 1970 and began working on large scale farms and ranches, in greenhouses, fields and at farmers markets.
His, and his family’s contribution to Farmstead Hudson Valley is immeasurable, and his talents are boundless. He is assisted by his son, Michael Cruz, and his life partner, Josefina, both valued members of the Farmstead Hudson Valley team.
Our Values
We’re learning as we go, contributing to a larger imperative of giving back to our community and our planet. And through it all, we’re having fun, getting our hands dirty, and opening our hearts.
Shaped By Nature
We grow outside in season in the Hudson Valley’s Columbia County, an area prized for its agricultural soils and preserved farmland. Our journey has revealed uncommon potential in our soil that fuels our passion for sensitive farming practices to preserve our natural environment and improve what we grow.
Farm Small
We plant for diversity, carefully selecting seeds and plantings for variety, flavor, and quality. Our small agricultural footprint allows us to employ micro-farming and management practices that are harmonic and sustainable to create equilibrium in our soils, reduce land degradation and strengthen our connection with the land.
Grow Local
We aim to give our customers a deeper connection to where their food comes from. Our produce and flowers are sold directly via our summer CSA, and to local chefs. We treasure our agricultural community and aim to be productive on its behalf to protect and enhance its resources for the benefit of current and future generations.
Listen To The Land
We base our farming practices on a deep respect for the land and to ensure the long-term health of our soils, woodlands, and water sources. We are integrating permaculture and employing sustainable methods to benefit the land over the long term and to lay the foundation for a vibrant and resilient environmental habitat.
