TWIN BARNS
AT THE STAATS HOUSE
Located where Stockport Creek meets the Hudson River, ten minutes north of the City of Hudson, Twin Barns at The Staats House is a place of outstanding natural beauty and history. The land surrounding the barns is of unique ecological significance. The Staats House, established in the 17th century, is said to be the oldest in Columbia County.
Two preserved 19th century barns on historic lands overlooking the Hudson River.
To the south, the Stockport Creek meanders to the Hudson River, its tidal rhythm defining the passing of the days.
The barns have been used for at least a century for agricultural purposes and are beautifully positioned in the landscape overlooking the Stockport Creek estuary and Hudson River. Our work to restore and preserve them honors the heritage of the many generations who have farmed these historic lands, reaching back centuries.
In reimagining the barns as spaces for creativity and gathering, the architecture firm BarlisWedlick and Margie Ruddick Landscape seamlessly blended the structures’ historic past within an ethos of sustainability and environmental sensitivity, to maintain the land’s scenic beauty and ecological integrity.
The Lower Barn is a warm and inviting space for gatherings and celebrations, centered around locally sourced food, and our own field-grown produce, and flowers. The space includes a full kitchen and lofts for overnight guests, with seamless transitions to the outdoors highlighting the natural beauty of the landscape.
The Upper Barn is a soaring open space tailored for larger gatherings, art and performance. This summer it will be a stop on the Upstate Arts Weekend tour, celebrating the arts and culture of the Hudson Valley, July 17 and extending through the weekend. The land where The Staats House is located was once the land of the Mahican Indian Tribe, an Eastern Algonquin Native American Tribe who inhabited the upper tidal Hudson River Valley. Their name reflects the original name of the Hudson River, Mahicannituck, the People of the Waters That are Never Still.
We honor and recognize the countless sacrifices made by these indigenous people so that we may care for this beautiful place.
Twin Barns at the Staats House is available for photo and film shoots.
